Raising Backgrounds

All Backgrounds must be explicitly purchased with XP, even if you RPed your way into owning them.

Several games do let you skip the costs of things you RPed your way into, but we don't make that exception in order to provide a more fair playing field between casuals and power-users and in order to incentivize our PRP runners to self-report what they're doing what you're doing by sending in XP allocation requests.

A player should not be eclipsed by another player for no other reason than who their RP partners happen to be (and thus whether their friends have the time and inclination to write a story about you getting that slick job or a kick-ass ghoul bodyguard). Making everybody pay the same XP for the same thing is only fair. That said, you indeed should be rewarded for plot participation, and that reward is XP, not waived expenditure thereof. In addition to the pose, +rec, ST and vote XP, PRP runners can and very well should fund your IC growth in their plots.

If you do not have the XP at the time that you acquire the background but you have more than 0 XP, you can purchase the background and simply incur a negative XP balance.

• Staff Run Scenes: Put in a +request describing your goal! Tell us what your goal is and how your character is going to get started in pulling it off. The storyteller will coordinate with you. Once you achieve your goal, you request staff to update your sheet.
• PRPs: Have someone else run a PRP for you. The PRP runner needs to submit a request to have it approved but once it's approved they may run it. Once your goal is achieved, you and the PRP runner tell staff about it so we can review it, and then we will update your sheet.

When acquiring a stat through role play, you must still pay with XP.

Don't forget about Karma! Whether you are getting something through PRP or Staff run scenes, when you pay 10 Karma you can buy a story beat that puts your character into a favorable position that makes whatever your goal is easier. A storyteller will hook you up with a story beat. Your success is not guaranteed, but you will have the wheels nice and greasy.
