Using Double Unlife

Double Unlife is a vampire-only background suitable for passing yourself off as a different vampire.

  • One Dot: Your character has learned the right name to drop and claimed a sire who is a confirmed member of the sect/clan she wants to insert herself in. Your character has no relationship with this vampire, however, and would be wise to choose someone who can't say "no", like a finally-dead one.
  • Two Dots: Your character furthermore has a handful of references in other cities who will confirm her as that sect/clan. These vampires are low-or-no status, so they can't help you jockey for position, but they can and will claim that you are who you say you are. Whether that's because they owe you or because they know you is a different story.
  • Three Dots: Your character does in fact have a relationship with the sire that they claim and that sire will confirm your alternate identity regardless of whether he actually wants to because now his reputation (and perhaps even his head) depends on yours. Your character has built a legitimate reputation in the sect/clan over the past as well. This reputation has not garnered your character status but it has garnered credibility.
  • Four Dots: Your alternate identity has risen to significant status at some point. Regardless of whether you still hold title within that sect/clan, if someone among them finds out who you are, they'll know that exposing you means exposing them all as ignorant and incompetent for having failed to realize your illusion when you were so prominent. NPCs will participate in a conspiracy of silence if they find out who you really are.
  • Five Dots: You have some history with members of the sect/clan who are now the luminaries, which means your conspiracy of silence has participants in high places. They're probably willing to bury whoever will expose you, literally or metaphorically. NPCs will actively protect your identity.

In Character Generation

Double Unlife is a standard Background bought with Background dots, Freebies, and Starting XP.

Characters with a Double Unlife score need to set a note called "double unlife." In this note, please designate the claimed identity, the claimed sire, and the status of said claimed sire (dead? estranged? etc). Additional information is ideal but not required.

After Character Generation

Double Unlife is available up to 3 dots the following ways:

  • Staff Run Scenes: Put in a +request describing your goal! Tell us what your goal is and how your character is going to get started in pulling it off. The storyteller will coordinate with you. Once you achieve your goal, you request staff to update your sheet.
  • PRPs: Have someone else run a PRP for you. The PRP runner needs to submit a request to have it approved but once it's approved they may run it. Once your goal is achieved, you and the PRP runner tell staff about it so we can review it, and then we will update your sheet.

When acquiring a stat through role play, you must still pay with XP.

Don't forget about Karma! Whether you are getting something through PRP or Staff run scenes, when you pay 10 Karma you can buy a story beat that puts your character into a favorable position that makes whatever your goal is easier. A storyteller will hook you up with a story beat. Your success is not guaranteed, but you will have the wheels nice and greasy.
