A Defender is authorized to use force and disciplines, if necessary, to protect sect members and enforce sect law. This doesn't mean they can bring weapons into Elysium or use Disciplines there. It just means that they are sanctioned to enforce the law, and sometimes that means getting froggy. Regular sect members who attack another sect member, by contrast, are subject to being Warned (and Disgraced if they do it in Elysium).

How Do I Get It?

A character with Authority (e.g. The Prince) can appoint a Defender without necessarily appointing them into a particular sect office, for a single night.

Anyone who is a Constable, Architect, Keeper Of Elysium, Sheriff, Bishop, or Templar can appoint a Defender, such as a sheriff deputizing another vampire. Staff approval is required to successfully appoint someone to a deputized position, which is persistent (unlike when the Prince points at someone and goes 'You! You're doing the thing tonight').
