IC Embraces

You can make a character who you intend on getting Embraced, or you can make a character who isn't a vampire and then later sign up for an embrace through the course of play. In these cases, here is how embraces work.

Requirements

ICly speaking, all that is necessary, technically, is the Embrace from another PC. Don't forget to get dat sweet permission from the Pr0nce. We do not provide NPC sires.

However, there's some heads-up ground to cover here.

Being a fledgling is actually not easy. You gotta be willing to play through an experience that has the potential to get complicated quickly or compromise your character's free will in some way. If you're thinking, "I don't know Vampire very well, so I should play a brand new vampire in order to get acclimated," you can try it, but it's vastly easier to just play a Neonate who has gotten past their first few years.

This is because of several social factors within Vampire. Your Sire will be held accountable for your actions (this is especially true for the Camarilla). This opens you up to your sire potentially wanting to control you in some fashion, and it also can put an unintentional but still evident burden on the character playing the sire because of the responsibility placed on them IC. It also opens up the possibility for other characters to prey on the potential liability that you pose due to how your sire is held accountable for whatever you do.

For example, other characters may try to manipulate your character into a screwup so they can take your sire down (and you will go down with them). In the Sabbat, you do not have protection under the law and can be very mistreated until you earn your Creation Rites (a rite of passage).

This is not to say that just because you're embraced you're going to therefore be immediately subjugated to poor treatment IC. It does mean, however, that being treated poorly IC can very well happen due to the nature of life as a fledgling. Staff will step in on your behalf on a case by case basis if the IC events are inappropriate, but it's important to start with a healthy OOC foundation to go down this unpredictable IC path. So, it needs to be between two players who have good OOC rapport, know what they're getting into together, and don't have concerns about their OOC social dynamic.

If you're not willing to sign up for that, that's totally legitimate, but that also means you shouldn't aspire to get embraced. Embraces are, therefore, strongly discouraged if they are being resorted to for the story purposes of "learn with my character" and if we are aware that you are not familiar with vampire we will arrange for you to just play a Neonate who has earned their legal rights in their sect.

Process

A scene gets ran for your Embrace, and at the end of that scene, you get the following things:

  • Generation dots equal to your Sire's Generation -1
  • 1 level in any one Discipline that is in-clan for your new Clan
  • As much blood as your Sire is willing to feed you during the scene, up to your Generational Maximum.

Then, we take you OOC. If a +job regarding your Embrace doesn't already exist at this time (for whatever reason), then a +job will be made at this time. On that +job, you'll be able to designate whatever XP spends that you want to spend with your currently saved up XP. This saved up XP can be spent on specific Backgrounds, Merits, and Flaws (below).

Once you have designated your purchases, you can go back IC. We want you to stay OOC until the purchases are set in order to make sure that there are no continuity errors ICly.

The cost of buying a Background is 3 x current rating, per level.

The cost of a Merit is 3 x Rating, flat-rate. This means that a 3 point Merit would cost 9 XP. A 5 point merit would cost 15 XP.

Flaws can also be acquired to give you XP. This XP can be kept outright, or used to offset the costs of Merits. You can only purchase up to 7 total points of flaws, including the flaws you brought in with you. For example, if you took 3 points of flaws originally during character generation, then you can acquire 4 more points of flaws upon embrace. If you already took 7 points of flaws, you cannot acquire more flaws.

Please note that the merits and flaws available for immediate purchase are specifically those which were not available to you during character generation due to applying as a plane-Jane human. Merits and Flaws that were available to you during character generation (like "Impatient" or "Enemy") are not available. A detailed selection of what is available to you is found below.

Backgrounds Available For Immediate Purchase

When Becoming something supernatural, a player may buy dots of certain Backgrounds immediately, to represent the circumstances of the Embrace. With that XP, you can buy dots of the following Backgrounds:

  • Double Unlife: If IC circumstances align (rival sires, some sort of weird interpersonal IC relationships, etc), you can buy Double Unlife up to 3 points. It costs 3 points per level. Thus:

Double Unlife Rating XP Cost

  • ●●● 12 XP
