1 An advantage is revealed Players stage an ambush on NPCs
2 An alliance is gained NPCs stage an ambush on players
3 A betrayal is revealed -- someone who helped the PCs in the past An open battle
4 A key piece of information is discovered A pursuit scene
5 A Foreshadowing occurs or a Warning is given NPCs confront the players (without combat) to threaten them
6 Someone is framed for something they did not commit NPCs have a ritualized contest with players
7 Forced to embark on a journey to find or destroy or recover something A dogfight (vehicular combat) ensues
8 Hesitation - the enemy pauses to negotiate a temporary truce - and the antagonist will betray at earliest opportunity A duel occurs with champions picked by each side
9 Something significant thought to be true is a lie! A Monster is an obstacle to the next Development
10 An action in a previous Beat is not as it was originally perceived: friends to enemies or a helpful thing is harmful. The NPCs overpower the PCs and chase them! They need to run to survive.
11 A Personal Stake is injected into the action - someone's health or allies etc gets threatened or taken away. The PCs and NPC must race to reach a goal first
12 Reveal a weakness in the opposition A Puzzle is introduced - must be solved before they can move on.
13 Sabotage is revealed. Some victims need to be rescued.
14 One member of the opposition decides to aid the Players For an unknown reason, the antagonists retreat -- urgently.
15 A common threat is revealed that forces the opposition to side with the players An Obstacle is the gate to the next development.
