Ever wondered if you can do something or if you should call in staff?
When To Go For It
When using a mechanic, if the effect is one-and-done (Auspex! A coincidental Prime scan!), you're fine to do it without asking for staff -- just be 100% certain you're doing it by the book. If you don't know how to do it by the book, you can of course reach out to staff, ask on channels, or OOCly ask your RP partner. As long as you do it by the book, you're good. Remember that "by the book" includes accounting for Paradox. You're on the honor system regarding taking Paradox for Vulgar Magick and botches. Not taking Paradox is c-h-e-a-t-i-n-g. Those caught cheating will no longer be trusted to self-adjudicate or judge for others and have any and all nifty superpower +commands stripped from them. Abuse Obfuscate, lose access to Obfuscate commands and only get to use it in the presence of an ST. Abuse +heal, lose access to +heal.
If you want to do something that resolves something short-term and/or something that would resolve on its own inside of 48 hours without Magickal intervention (ex. healing Bashing or Lethal damage), there's no reason to have to open a job and wait on those, as long as you can do it.
When To Get Staff
If something is going to have a persistent effect on the game world, contact staff so we can not only vet that it's done mechanically correctly, we can alter the game world accordingly (setting notes, updating stats, etc).
For example, if you want to burn down a building, you can RP about the scene of burning down the building, but in order to ensure the event makes it into the game's continuity, staff needs to be looped in. After all, players can't alter the grid and a staffer will be necessary to update the burnt building!
If something is going to threaten the Masquerade or the Rule of Shade when you do it, get staff. This explicitly includes "vulgar with witnesses" magick casting. If no staff is available, please self-report through a +request so staff can review it later and have the IC world respond accordingly.
If something involves drastic changes or consequences to your character or to another character, with or without their IC consent, get staff. Again, we need to check that it tracks mechanically, and it takes a staff member to make necessary changes to adopt your actions and their impact into the story world. This includes creating a Magickal item or permanent mundane piece of +equipment not accessible through +eq/buy. Most of the time this is merely a matter of how it is only staff who are capable of updating your equipment or official notes and so official record confirming what is IC requires their participation.
If staff are not online and all involved parties OOCly consent, players are entrusted to move forward on the condition that they follow the mechanics involved 100% correctly, and then follow up by a self-reporting +request. The moment that one person does not OOCly consent, the scene must pause so that staff can become directly involved instead. Individual players who abuse this trust will be handled on a case by case basis.
If you're trying to change or effect something that would not resolve within 48 hours on its own (ex. Healing Aggravated damage), get staff.
How To Get Staff
Type +staffcall to ping staffers. It sends a beepyboy to connected staff and also sends in a +request on your behalf. Or, send in a +request.
