The description for the Awareness ability conflicts in V20 and M20. Here are the rules we use to resolve these contradictions:

Detecting Supernatural Things

  • Awareness allows all characters to get vague feelings (hunches, chills, flashes of inspiration) when near supernatural effects (page 101, V20 Core).
    • You can roll if you are the subject of a supernatural effect, if you can perceive the affected area of a supernatural effect, or if you are within 100 feet of an effect.
    • The roll is Perception + Awareness vs a base difficulty of 9 (this roll may be adjusted at ST discretion).
      • -1 Difficulty if you are the actual target.
      • -1 Difficulty if you actually have the exact same power being used, yourself.
  • To get specific information to refine that hunch, a character must then roll Intelligence + Occult or use a particular power (page 101, V20 Core).
    • 1 Success: You determine whether it's immediately hostile.
    • 2 Successes: You can discern the target.
    • 3+ Successes: You identify the power's intent overall.
    • 5+ Successes: You identify the source.
  • As stated on page 101 of V20 core, any character with Awareness 4 may determine whether someone or something is supernatural with a Perception + Awareness roll.
    • The character needs an actual IC basis to attempt this roll, and does not get this roll just for being around the person or thing.
    • This roll does not confer specific knowledge like "so and so is a vampire." It just confers "so and so is not mundane."
  • Although V20 core states that a character with Awareness 5 "instinctually" knows if someone/something is supernatural, we are going to ignore this detail because knowing someone or something is supernatural on sight is not cooperative with a MUSH environment.

Awareness Rules For Vampires

Characters with Auspex may benefit from the perception bonuses granted by Auspex (page 134). Awareness is used in place of the Malkavian Time secondary skill (see page 146 of V20 Lore Of The Clans). Only Malkavians may use Awareness in this way.

Awareness Rules For Mages

As stated on page 276 of M20 Core, Mages with Awareness 3 or higher may use awareness in rolls to perceive auras. Non-Mages may not do this.
