We employ a Karma system! Karma is accumulated on a player (not a character: your accounts are linked when you register new characters) and is a spendable goodwill system.
Karma gives players benefits:
- Autonomy: Modern Nights places a lot of trust on players to use code that helps them be autonomous. If your Karma is reduced (such as by abusing this trust!) you lose access to coded-in supernatural effects and cannot buy new equipment without staff assistance.
- Mid-Scene Concessions: You can use Karma as currency in order to buy certain concessions from the ST.
- Plot Armor: With enough Karma, you can survive a scene that looks like it's going to kill your character. You can hold off on this decision to the killing blow moment.
You accumulate Karma over time: a slow drip of 1 point a week. You also accumulate Karma through contributions to the game: running PRPs, making meaningful contributions to the website/grid, recruiting players, sticking to your character's flaws, upholding the IC-OOC divide when it's strained, keeping a positive attitude when things are rough for your character, and gracefully handling OOC issues like disagreements.
You lose karma through poor behavior: abusing built-in code, metagaming, injecting OOC motivations into IC actions, OOC lying to staff/players (IC lying is highly encouraged especially on vampires), and being defensive or rude or confrontational.
Players can nominate other players for good or bad karma by making a request: '+request karma <person>=<reason>'. Staffers are ultimately in charge of the up/down-votes.
